Dear Clive

Ref: TW penalised for playing players in wrong order
Score amended

I’m sure you can imagine my surprise when I checked the website and found that it was true! Our 4 measly points appear to have been taken away without any consultation whatsoever. Now Clive, I know you’re a man who deals in facts and there’s no way you would have taken this drastic action without getting your facts straight first. So you are fully aware that our order, resubmitted mid way through the season as permitted, is as follows:

1 COLIN PAYNE
2 JAMES TAPSFIELD
3 JOLYON HEAD
4 JONNY POWELL
5 PETER FLINT
6 RYAN WHITELY
7 HADLEY NEALE
8 PAUL BUCKNER
9 HERMAN DE WETT
10 PAUL MCLOUD

Now I’m no genius Clive, but you don’t have to be to work this one out. Did we play in our nominated order? Looks that way, and I’m almost certain you can see it to. So given the facts, I can only conclude we’re in a brave new world where you get to decide the order of my team. Now I know you have a problem with Peter being nominated below Jonny, but seeing as you know my players better than I do you’ll be fully aware he’s unable to play between matches as he’s recently relocated, started a new job, and is coming to terms with the trauma of giving up his closet semi-vegetarianism. Tough stuff for any man. Which is why he requested of his captain (me) he be nominated down the order. Besides, beating you 10-8 in the 5th hardly suggests he’s in the nick of his life, does it Clive?

Now I know what you’re thinking Clive. You’re thinking “I’ve opened a can of worms here!” I mean let’s face it Clive, if your able to decide the order of my team, then surely I’m allowed to decide the order of yours? But don’t worry Clive, I’m not going to deduct all your points where Steve has played above James. At least I wouldn’t do it without consulting you first. I’m just not that petty.

But I do need help Clive. Something has been puzzling me, and here I’m going to have to defer you your greater wisdom. What I can’t understand is what would be the point of us playing is the wrong order? I mean let’s face it Clive, we were unlikely to get much change out of the top 2 were we? Any hope of winning the match rested firmly with the bottom 3. And in those circumstances it makes no sense for us to play in the wrong order, because then we have even less chance of winning at 3, don’t we Clive? Unless of course the strategy was beat Clive at all costs. But it wasn’t Clive, we’re not out to get you at the expense of everything else.

So Clive, as “the author” is popping in his one eyed lens to write this week’s drivel on Wednesday, do something useful and give us our points back. Otherwise people might begin to think you're a sore loser.

Just in case you have misjudged the Author (a fine upstanding fellow) - check with the Administrator (he of the fastest red pencil finger).  It looks from the note below your result that he may not have received your renominations.

Jolly(J)ohn

Jolyon - See John Creek's reply for the real answer (thanks for the character reference John). I had absolutely nothing to do with this. Honest guv. I had no problem whatsoever with playing Peter. I thoroughly enjoyed the game (once I'd got over the disappointment of letting the 5th get away from me). Nor have I got any axe to grind with who you play where. No odds to me. I just want a decent game of squash.

Having seen Peter play before I'm well aware of his capabilities, so your (very) thinly veiled sarcasm about the closeness of the result is misplaced. I had no idea of the background to his appearances or otherwise.

As to your comments about Steve and James, what is this intended to mean? Steve is nominated above James on the basis that (a) he's beaten him several times in friendlies, (b) James has been injured all season and (c) Steve is after the hardest games he can get as he's trying to improve his game rather more seriously than James is.

I assume that the administrator notes means these are George England's comments as I believe he validates the results. As far as I'm concerned you guys all played a genuine hard match and whatever points you got you deserved.

I'll try not to get too worked up about your view of me as stated above, and to keep my "one eyed lens" and "drivel levels" at an acceptable level. I didn't realise anyone would get that worked up about it. I'm just to provide a (very) mildly amusing account of proceedings on the basis that most don't bother and one or two people seem to feel it's worth bothering.

No hard feelings I hope once you realise that perhaps your one eyed lens needs a polish!

Blimey Jolyon, you went in with both barrels blazing here !

I think your a top bloke J but I have a sneaking feeling another large dollup of humble pie is going slap you round the back of the head again on this one.  Like Mr Creeky, I have to say this is not Clive's style, he may be a miserable old git but he wouldn't waist his time trying to deny you the points won on the night.

On a wider note regarding the drivel written on a Wednesday. Believe it or not, this is a pain in the *rse to do in the first place hence no one at yours and most other clubs  bother to do it. Hand Jive has manfully churned out the reports for several years now which in my opinion is to his credit. I have been hounded into starting again which I have done but I will quite happily hand myself a P45 if the majority share the opinion of your good self.

That said, best of luck for your last game of the season.

Thanks Ray (I think that's what they call being damned with faint praise)!

OK, OK, Mr Bushell is right. Massive dollops of humble pie being frantically consumed here. I must have seen a little red mist yesterday when I saw the point deduction and jumped to an incorrect conclusion. Also the prospect of playing the mighty Dulwich 1 with a 6 point gap between us and the dreaded precipice made me come out swinging a bit frantically.

Clive, I apologise unreservedly for the accusations, thinly veiled sarcasm, insinuations, and detrimental comments about your match reports. Reading it back I did manage to cram quite a lot in there. Thanks for your measured response..........much more appropriate forum etiquette.

For the record I’ve spoken to Graham who has confirmed receipt of our nominated mid season re-order, so hopefully the score will be amended.

Right, “squeaky bum time” for us tonight...............enjoy fellow Kent squashers.................

that's hilarious! I wouldn't worry Jolyon - a bit of (un)controlled aggression can be a good thing. It seems to be having a good effect on your game at the moment anyway. good luck tonight

That's better a bit of banter again...

I think the reports are great and wish it was part of the team captains job to put a few comments together about the match every week.

It may be best to leave last weeks match report out from Rod 1 v PL2 though!

I can't believe you feel that way about Rod v PL2 Tom. Wasn't Ken's report unbelievably diplomatic?! He must be mellowing. I heard the "full" story from my PL spies and:

(a) it sounds like it would have made interesting viewing,
(b) I wish you'd do that when you play me rather than bury every ball in the nick (!)
(c) how did you make it home without being lynched by your teammates?

I was a bit surprised by the report too - he let me off very lightly, although I still stand by the fact that those decisions that pushed me over the edge were not made by mistake. But from a comfy 2:0 up and leading the 3rd it's a bit silly to retire when the match is 2:2.  I was also frustrated about only having 1 court for the match and not getting on until after 10pm with Ken saying it's fine in the PAR scoring.  Well yes if you are all local, but we had an hour drive back at the end of the evening.

The car journey home was quiet...
